Hi, I’m Jennifer. I’ve been a professional editor for more than 15 years, in a career encompassing everything from copy editing to web content strategy, and a writer my entire life. I’ve written opinion columns, technical manuals, how-to articles and lifestyle pieces, and I write fiction as Alicia Brown. I started Peachtree Content in 2013 with the goal of helping clients fulfill their content needs while fostering challenge and variety in my own writing practice.
Five Fun Facts About Me
- In my early 20s, while attending grad school in Florida, I was the lead singer in a rock band called Wish. We played gigs at pubs and music festivals, and put out a CD of original songs that was even reviewed in a local publication! I remember the reviewer wrote that we sounded like the Pretenders but with less edge: “more like Pretender-mania,” which I think was an awesomely on point description of our sound.
2) I became interested in Welsh history and mythology as a child from reading Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain series, and later, as an adult, Sharon Kay Penman’s Here Be Dragons trilogy. In 2018, I crossed an item off my bucket list by finally visiting Wales in person. I also finished a three-year project of recapping the Prydain books, chapter by chapter, on my blog.
Bonus fun fact: the aforementioned blog project was mentioned in Claire Cook’s book “Shine On”!
3) If I could time-travel to any period in history, I’d choose the late 1960s. In fact, the first piece of my writing to ever be published was a letter to the editor defending the relevance of ’60s TV shows and music in the late ’80s. When I couldn’t find any novels that described what it was like to be a teenage girl immersed in the hippie movement, I wrote one. My YA novel “The Freedom Dreamers” is set in 1968 New York, where Jill, a 16-year-old runaway, hopes to make her dream of appearing on Broadway a reality. She falls in with a group of young, long-haired “freaks,” and her days quickly become a dizzying blur of drugs, free love, and hedonism. But life isn’t all peace and flowers: the specter of Vietnam is ever-present, and the risk-taking comes at a tragic price for some of her new friends. After reconnecting with a former neighbor, Jill sheds her hippie identity in favor of a more conservative lifestyle, but ultimately must decide what is most important in life: following her dreams of stardom or standing up for a cause with the friends she loves.
4) Much like Jill, I’m obsessed with plays–watching them, acting in them, and writing them–and my dream is to one day see a script that I wrote be brought to life on the stage.
5) One of my favorite things about living in Atlanta is the annual Labor Day weekend geek extravaganza known as Dragon Con. I love dressing up in costume; my past cosplays have included Starbuck from “Battlestar Galactica,” Sookie from “True Blood” and Red from “Orange Is the New Black.” I can usually be found attending panels in the writing or YA tracks, and fangirling out over my favorite writers, such as the amazing and talented Lev Grossman, author of “The Magicians” trilogy.
